Oracle Cloud infrastructure and more...
Tech Field Day 17 - Oracle Campus - 18 Oct 2018
We were in Oracle Campus for the second day afternoon event of Tech Field Day about Oracle Cloud Infrastructure .There was a small lake inside the campus where you could see the winner catamaran of USA Cup. It was very hard see from outside campus.
We had great sessions about Oracle Cloud , starting with Leo Leung who is Sr. Director of Products&Strategy and involved the cloud team 2 years ago. For the past 4 years time, the the cloud team have prepared thier own infrastructure with developers, architects, end users to be a player in the market. Oracle Cloud's bussiness intent was to be an enterprise cloud service provider and provide perfomance, availability and SLA to customers.
The main question is why do we need an other cloud service? The answer is simple. to provision enterprise service for enterprise customers with high perfomance and unlock the new cloud opportunites.
"With Oracle Cloud , customers can move their workloads , applications and databases without almost no changes in their architecture."
Oracle Cloud has core compute, storage and networking services like other providers. The main challenge here is they can provide different types of bare metal instances like 52 CPU cores with block, local, file and archive storage types with millions of iops to ensure the performance.
For container lovers, they have also implamented K8S engine for docker native container for move in and out of cloud using Terraform, the orchestrator technology.
For the EDGE, they made a acqusition with DYN and got thier DNS, security, monitoring rather than develop an organic architecture.
With the experience of DYN, Oracle cloud has much more stable and protective services on the EDGE.
Cloud at Customer also is very interesting. Oracle Cloud provides all the hardware and management services on the customers' data center with the pay as you go model. This is very suitable for the system and database admins to feel the Oracle performance and stability on their own environment with suitable budgets.
Oracle Cloud provides service in 4 regions, Phoenix, Ashburn, London Frankfurt. They have aggressive plan to add more regions connected with lower costs covering North America,Europe. For reducing the connectivity cost, customers prefer private connectivity between DC and the customers own datacenter through a network provider. The tricky part is here. Oracle cloud charges port hour although other providers charge for bandwith for direct, private connection.
I keep the delicous part at the end. They offer storage and network performance SLA .Which means, if any the performance is below some thresholds, they give service credits.
If you are interested to try Oracle Cloud services up to 3500 free hours for 30 days free, click the link to start your Oracle Cloud experience.
As a conclusion, Oracle Cloud provides great services with a reasonable price with SLA's SLA's although it is new to the market.
